Over the hedge

Formal hedges are the hedgetrimmer's and topiarist's delight, since they can be clipped into neat or fantastical shapes.

The range of species for hedging plants is immense, but as a rough guideline, it can be divided arbitrarily between formal and informal hedges. The desired height will, to some extent, then determine the species of hedging plant most suitable. The most appropriate height for a hedge can best be estimated by planting a line of bamboo canes along a proposed hedge line, then viewing it from various parts of the property. When sitting a hedge, be sure that it comes within your own property: since even a small hedge can grow to be up to 600mm-thick and hence the original planting line must be at least 300mm inside the boundary line. And because of their shape and colour, hedges can also be attractive features in their own right. But hedges have an important advantage over walls – they provide the perfect backdrop for display borders, flowerbeds and individual specimen shrubs.

Hedges are a great natural way of dividing your garden and they will add visual interest to any outdoor composition.Ī boundary hedge performs virtually the same function as a boundary wall – giving privacy, acting as a windbreak, ensuring privacy and keeping trespassers out and animals and dogs in.
